Paintings 1962-66 - Title : The eyes have it - Oil on canvas 36”x28”
“The Weatherson world is one of a sort of rational oddity, one in which the poetically bizarre seems commonplace. In great areas of succulent expressive paint there move strange human creatures, like amiable poltergeists,or inanimate objects – musical instruments, seaside piers, cats-cradles and bird-cages – on which is bestowed a life like that of human beings. These fragments from a slightly alarming but on the whole reassuring reverie, seem absolutely natural – as real, when one looks at them, as are, when one sleeps, the images of a dream. The odd, amusing, and disturbing world that Alexander Weatherson has created is entirely convincing because a vivid and original imagination is served by the born and well-trained gifts of a colourist, a draughtsman, and a designer who can give to a picture its own autonomous reality.” Colin Macinnes
“Do not be misled by the humour. It is certainly present in these paintings, though less marked than it was a few years ago. Weatherson now uses humour rather as he uses colour - passionately but sparingly. It is not because he dislikes or mistrusts it, but, just as he believes that too much colour results in decoration, so he knows that an overindulgence in humour would lead to a decrease in seriousness.” Alan Bowness
